Masterpiece Dance Academy (MDA) is more than just a dance school. It is a community-building, safe environment for the children residing in Dassenhoek.
The founder, Bonga Hlongwane, grew up in Dassenhoek and experienced first-hand the effects of gang violence on the lives of children and teenagers. With a talent for dance and a desire to see change in his community, he created MDA.
MDA creates a safe environment for the students to express themselves creatively through dancing while also receiving mentorship from Bonga and the dance teachers.
Due to a lack of resources, the students often attend the classes on empty stomachs and the teachers cannot be compensated for their time devoted to teaching.
Through our partnership with MDA, we have assisted in providing sandwiches for the students and stipends for the teachers.
The students are now able to dance without the distraction of hunger while the teachers can provide for their families.
